«Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself and walk wherever you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will gird you, and bring you where you do not wish to go» (John 21:18).
The context appears to be a prophecy regarding the Apostle Peter’s future death.
A friend I hold in high regard recently referred to this scripture in an innovative contextualization. HIS context was that a time comes for most of us where, in the final stage of old age, we are just as vulnerable and at the mercy of our surroundings as when we entered this world as newborns.
HIS message was that life consists of different stages or seasons. We are not at our peak all the time, neither in terms of career nor reputation. Most people who are perceived as ‘great’ during a certain period of life are forgotten in the next. If we are mindful of this fact, it might be easier for us – in ALL stages of life – to embrace the Apostle Paul’s command/exhortation to serve one another (Gal 5:13) and to submit to one another mutually (Eph 5:21).
